Completed on 16 November 1900, this unique instrument was specially commissioned and built for the Brussels lawyer Arthur Piérard, and sold through Alphonse Mailly, organ professor at the Brussels Conservatoire and a close associate of the Mustel family.
The instrument has been completely restored and returned to full playing condition, with all its original functions operating as intended when it left the Mustel workshops in 1900.
Combining Mustel’s celebrated Harmonium d’Art and Célesta, it is an exceptional survivor of the craftsmanship, innovation and refinement of the Mustel workshops.

Designed as a genuine piano in a remarkably portable format, the keyboard folds into the case for transport while preserving a conventional piano action and stringing.
The model has a fascinating history. Cramer advertised it for soldiers’ concerts in France, while an example of the Patent Portable Piano was famously taken by Captain Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic, where it reportedly survived the extreme conditions in playable condition.
A remarkable survivor from the golden age of exploration.
